Why Is Underwear Essential for the Well-being of Homeless People?
It’s hard to imagine underwear as an unaffordable luxury, but unfortunately, this is the reality for people facing homelessness. Underwear is essential for the well-being of homeless people for several reasons.
It provides a basic level of hygiene and comfort, helping to prevent skin irritations and infections from prolonged exposure to unclean conditions.
Clean underwear also contributes to a sense of dignity and self-respect, offering individuals privacy and personal care crucial for their mental and emotional well-being.
Proper undergarments also help regulate body temperature, especially in fluctuating weather conditions, reducing the risk of illnesses related to exposure from living outside.
How You Can Support Homeless Individuals

New Underwear
Clean underwear is a crucial element of stability, comfort, and well-being for people who are experiencing homelessness. Without it, they risk health problems associated with poor hygiene, which can further isolate them from society.

Besides providing dignity, a supportive bra can offer safety for women living on the streets. Sexual assault is prevalent among homeless women, so wearing bras can act as a deterrent and provide an additional layer of protection against the cold.

New T-Shirts/Undershirts
T-shirts can offer extra warmth to individuals facing cold weather or staying in shelters without heat. For those who are in transitional programs, a clean t-shirt can play a crucial role in breaking the cycle of poverty and increasing their chances of getting a job.
“We are a low-barrier shelter and we try to provide the basic needs of our clients. Underwear definitely falls into the category of a basic need and offers our clients a bit of human dignity.
“I have seen too many times the lack of dignity our clients feel when we have to tell them we don't have any underwear for them. I am constantly on the trail of underwear donations and generally fail to obtain the quantities in the sizes that we need.”
